SUNBELT RENTALS HIGHWAYS
We help contractors keep the UK road network flowing safely. We provide plant, equipment and solutions to build smart motorways, develop new roads and adapt old ones. We are also on hand to provide traffic management for projects or locally, wherever it’s needed.
We work for some of the biggest contractors in the UK, providing a whole range of equipment either on-site or from our local depots. Our traffic management team is co-ordinated from our 24/7/365 national control centre in Kemble and from strategic locations across the network.
Our Traffic team provides a full traffic management service, including: site surveys, CAD design, approvals from local authorities, utility companies, the police and major infrastructure providers. We also provide emergency support for crisis response, helping make sure road users and pedestrians are kept away from threats or incidents and managed at a safe distance.
Case Studies
How Greener Solutions are helping to drive the largest road infrastructure project in Wales
Sunbelt Rentals embraced the challenge to provide a complete range of greener plant and equipment solutions for use on the largest road infrastructure project commissioned by the Welsh Government. Starting in 2021 and scheduled to complete in 2025, the A465 from Dowlais Top to Hirwaun is being converted to two lanes in each direction.
M4 Smart Motorway
As part of Highways England’s £1.5 billion Smart Motorway Programme, the Balfour Beatty VINCI joint venture is converting a 32-mile stretch of the M4 to a smart motorway. Extending from Junction 3 near Heathrow Airport to Junction 12 at Reading, the upgrade will increase capacity, reduce congestion and shorten journey times for the thousands of road users who use this part of the motorway network every day.
Extra capacity is being added to the motorways through the conversion of the hard shoulder to an additional lane of traffic. Electronic signs are being installed to impose electronically-policed variable speed restrictions and manage the flow of traffic in response to driving conditions. As part of the works, 11 overbridges are being replaced with larger span structures and six underbridgesare being widened to accommodate four lanes.
Dual View Safety on the A19
We are a strategic supply partner supporting Costain to deliver major improvements to the Testos Roundabout on the A19 in the North East.
The upgrade began in March 2019. It involves construction of a flyover over the existing roundabout and new slip roads being built to connect it to the A184. Once complete it will alleviate severe congestion and unlock development potential at the nearby Nissan and International Advanced Manufacturing Park.
We are providing vital equipment to Costain to support delivery of this project.
Innovation for Preston
Costain, on behalf of Lancashire County Council is building a major new road in Preston. The project is called the Preston Western Distributor, which will link Preston and southern Fylde to the M55 motorway.
Scheduled to open early in 2023, this £200m road scheme is the biggest new road programme in the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal. It will help to promote new housing and business development in the area, whilst increasing capacity on the existing local road network.
A14 - on site innovation
We were a key delivery partner to the A14 Integrated Delivery Team, who together delivered the UK's largest road construction project. The IDT consisted of our customers Balfour Beatty, Costain and Skanska, who were all part of the joint venture appointed by Highways England.
Together they upgraded 21 miles of the East of England’s major trunk road between Cambridge and Huntingdon in a £1.5 billion project.
The scheme began in 2016 and over a four-year period saw the road widening to three lanes in each direction. It also included a brand new 17-mile bypass south of Huntingdon. This new bypass will have four lanes in each direction between Bar Hill and Girton.
The A14 is a key route between the East Coast and the Midlands. These improvements will speed up journeys by up to 20 minutes whilst adding capacity to the network, boosting the local and national economy and will provide a safer passage for the 85,000 travellers who use the road every day.
The scheme was completed ahead of schedule and handed over eight months early in 2020.
