Asset Tracking Critical Equipment
In September 2023, Spirit Energy dismantled the DP3 and DP4 installations in the Morecambe Bay development, East Irish Sea, and removed 9,000 tonnes of jacket structures using the vessel’s jacket lift system. These structures were transferred to the Iron Lady barge for recycling in Fife.

Throughout the shutdown, Sunbelt Rentals took on the responsibility of supplying and managing safety-critical assets onshore and offshore.
The main goal was to uphold and improve compliance with safety service schedules, which involved performing bump tests for over 100 monitors twice a day. A committed team of four worked 12-hour shifts, playing a crucial role in the effective execution of these tasks both onsite and within the Onsite Safety Centre. Our expert team ensured compliance, handled issue/return procedures, and provided product traceability support, offering a comprehensive solution for onsite material management of safety-critical items.
The Challenge
The primary challenge was to maintain complete traceability of the equipment throughout the TA, minimising the loss of items by the end of the shutdown. In the event of items being declared as losses, it was crucial to provide comprehensive reporting information to Spirit Energy. This information enabled them to recover costs from the specific contracting group responsible for misplacing or damaging the equipment.
The Solution
Sunbelt Rentals used Assetagz, a cutting-edge asset management technology, for seamless operations. This solution uses a duallink system that connects barcodes on equipment to cloud-based computer software. This enables approved users to easily scan items for check-out and return. The software includes a feature to flag and manage service events, ensuring complete compliance. To further enhance efficiency, a variety of reports are generated and analysed daily. These reports help monitor hire fleet utilisation, reduce turnaround times, and accurately determine future equipment quantity requirements.
The Result
Sunbelt Rentals has been an essential partner during both normal operations and the demanding Shutdown/Turnaround seasons at Spirit Energy. They provide and maintain critical safety equipment, including SCBA, gas detection, rescue gear, radios, and communication equipment. Their RFID tracking system efficiently manages daily issuance and tracking of this equipment. During our Shutdown periods, Sunbelt Rentals also provide larger plant equipment like generators, FLT, telehandlers, diesel bowsers, and compressors. Their technicians not only deliver but also maintain, service, and operate this equipment. In addition, they have established a full complete contractor village for our 2021/2022/2023 shutdowns, including welfare cabins, toilet blocks, and power installations. Sunbelt Rentals has proven to be an invaluable ally, consistently exceeding expectations and contributing to the success of our operations.Craig May - Onsite HSE
